Family vacation plus J
By British Airways
Stayed in a villa near Poggio Aquilone
What I read:
The His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman (the UK version)
The gist of it:
My family planned this trip for my mom’s 60th birthday. It was the first time we had all been away together since I was in high school (!). But good news, we still enjoy each others’ company outside the USA.
My sister, J and I flew into Rome from London where we met a tired W and braved the car hire stands in Rome airport. Our villa was about 3 hours from the airport and I would say the drive was easy! But J did the actual driving.
We were in Umbria for a week, so this trip will span a few a posts. My parents rented a lovely villa in the hills with views in every direction. From our villa we took day trips to Orvieto, Civita de Bagnoregio, Assisi, Deruta (the home of ceramico), Montefalco (wine tasting!) and Todi. We also spent 24 hours in Rome at the end of the trip.
Our villa was close to the town of Marsciano, which was maybe the least beautiful town we visited, but we had a great meal at Be Happy. We did not go out to dinner very often though, as we had the villa. My dad also kindly got two meals catered for us to celebrate.
From the villa we walked to San Venanzo, which unbeknownst to us (the kids at least) was a ten mile walk over hill and dale. We also almost missed lunch when we arrived because in San Venanzo, like many of the small towns we visited, restaurants shut between 1:00-4:00. However, we did find a small shop and bought the best piadina I have ever had – the flavor of relief.
Photos from around the villa taken over the course of our week.
Probably my favorite picture from the trip, that green.
